Gary started playing accordion at the age of 8. He attended the Jimmy Blair Accordion School in Berkeley Street , Glasgow and then at Douglas Street , after it moved to bigger premises .
He became a member of the Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestra around 1971 .They travelled far and wide and competed in many competitions throughout Europe. They won the UK accordion championships many times and Gary also won several first places at the same competitions
His first “pro” gig was at the Eglinton Toll cinema , Glasgow in 1973 (13 years old) for their Saturday matinee talent contest . The band consisted of his brothers Colin (guitar) Malcolm (drums) and his duet partner Iain Duff…. payment was by ice cream, drinks and free cinema tickets!
He went on to form the Claymore Ceilidh Band with drummer Donnie McNeil (now of Vatersay Boys fame) and were the resident band on the ferry in Glasgow.
After Donnie left due to relocating on the isle of Barra , Gary formed the Gary Blair Ceilidh Band. They are still going strong today.
Gary also performs and teaches various music from around the world.
